My kids were introduced to the Pigeon books by friends. They are hilarious. While looking for more Pigeon books at the library, I discovered the Elephant and Piggie books. They are all about two friends, an elephant named Gerald and a pig named Piggie (of course). I could read these books over and over and over again. What's not to love about a book entitled "I Am Invited to a Party"?
These are the best early reader books I've seen since Dr. Seuss. The stories are funny and realistic (well, except for the talking elephant and pig). The illustrations are amazing and convey so much feeling that when we read "I Love My New Toy" and the unthinkable happens (the toy breaks) Jack Jack was actually experiencing the range of emotions the characters go through. It scared him so much that he didn't want to read the story again, until we discussed how the friends were feeling, and how they expressed their feelings, and how we express our feelings, and that it's okay to feel happy and sad and angry and sorry and excited and everything in between.
In addition to the Pigeon books and the Elephant and Piggie books, we've also read books about "Cat the Cat." What could make more sense than a cat named Cat who has a duck friend named Duck, a bee friend named Bee and a rhino friend named Rhino?
Mo Willems has written other books, too. We haven't read them all yet, but we will. You can't go wrong with Mo.

Mo Willems is probably one of my very favorite children's authors. Have you tried the Kunuffle Bunny by him? It's also a great series.
I really like the Kunuffle Bunny! I will look for these others.
I am just getting around to reading your blog while getting your baby update. We love Elephant and PIggie (and all of the other Mo Willems books too). My kids will just crack up and repeat the lines to each other. The expressions on the characters faces are priceless.
